Compilations
Spill produced a series of compilations in the 1990s to highlight the interesting sounds of Australia and beyond. These were titled simply Spill Compilations 1, 2 and 3 and are available below.
In the 2000s we collaborated on the Melbourne Water compilation series, released on CD through the W.Minc label. We're working to put these online - volume 1 is available below and 2 is on the way.
We also collaborated on a bunch of theme and tribute compilations - scroll down to see some of these.
All sounds on the Spill compilation are owned by the artists listed, except when they are covers. Similar to the Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives licence provided by creativecommons.org, you may download and play these songs, as long as you credit the artist, but may not modify or use them for commercial purposes without contacting the artist for permission.
Spill Compilation 1 (1992)
The first Spill compilation was compiled in Carlton in 1992 on a high-quality analogue cassette deck. It was released as a 100 minute cassette featuring 26 tracks.
Spill Compilation 2 (1993)
The second Spill compilation was released in November 1993 as the indie scene in Melbourne's inner north rapidly expanded and people moved here to be part of it. We chose to release Spill 2 on the exciting new Compact Disc format, and master it to DAT at Cest-Ca studio in Collingwood. Spill 2 was launched at the Empress Hotel in North Fitzroy. Features 29 tracks on a 76 minute CD.
Spill Compilation 3 (1995)
The third Spill compilation came together during the southern summer of 1994-95. It was mastered at Cest-Ca studio in Collingwood, Fiona Walshe provided the cover painting, and Dave Metcalfe did the printing. We boxed the discs by hand on the day of the launch at the Punters Club, Fitzroy. 24 tracks on a 74 minute CD.
Melbourne Water series (2004 and 2006)
In the 2000s Spill collaborated on the Melbourne Water compilation series, released on CD through the W.Minc label. We're working to put these online - volume 1 is done and 2 is on the way. There's loads of artwork so these are on separate pages - please click to enjoy:
Valiant (SWE tribute, 1996)
Julian Williams produced this tribute to Brisbane band Small World Experience. It features a number of Australian indie bands of the 1990s, each making a SWE song their own. Spill helped with production.
The songs on Valiant were written by Small World Experience. The recordings are owned by the artists listed. Similar to the Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives licence provided by creativecommons.org, you may download and play these recordings, as long as you credit the artist, but may not modify or use them for commercial purposes without contacting the artist for permission.
Box (TV themes, 1996)
This compilation was curated in 1995-6 by Richard Hagen in Brisbane, with organizational help at the Melbourne end from Spill. It features a selection of Australian indie musicians of the day, some incognito, covering their favourite TV show themes.
from Richard: "The cover photo is from Bruce Robinson's film How to Get Ahead in Advertising, starring Richard E. Grant. Richard photographed it using a nice camera borrowed from Michael Lawley. David Metcalfe selected the best shot for the artwork, and did the printing at a knock down price. Richard's sister, Annette Hagen, contributed the title."
