INFORMATION ON SEVERAL COMBOS WHO'VE HAD FTSM RELEASES

GRIN...

an offshoot of the insestuous friend network in perth.after the demise of WILLA BENOLA,julian williams started working with mark richardson.at first it was the duo, honing their craft in a mt hawthorn room at the back of a house.songs from willa benola days spilled over as well as a new brace of tunes based around guitar, bass and a farfisa organ.by the time of our first show at the actors centre in the winter of 1991,we'd roped in chris gorman to do some drumming.we also recorded a bunch of songs to four track at a factory owned by chris's dad in osborne park.as summer and another actors cenre gig approached, jon campbell was added with his beefy guitar.the band folded when mark went to work in albany.the lever tape is a hotchpotch of live recordeings and the aformentioned four track thingos.

THE GOOBS...

this really isnt a band at all.at a WILLA BENOLA practice session, when andrew craw didnt show, the other members at the time mark richardson, julian williams and chris gorman (see what i mean by insestuous) made up a bunch of stuff, some of which isnt bad (snore) and some which is downright ebarrasing (not going to mention it).yep it was a sunday in 1990.the day of the goob.

BUFFER...

after GRINs demise, julian williams got with a feller called dean (who is remotely famous for drumming in the band header).we practised in deans mums music school in victoria park, which was fun, cause we had access to lots of musical instruments.we tried to get a drummer, jamming with a few.one in particular i remember was a heavy metal kid, when we needed a klaus dinger type.we soldiered on,coming up with ten songs or so.we recorded most of them with the help of our perenial drummer sidekick chris gorman on the ole tascam 244 four track.thats where the tape comes from.the band never had time to develope, and i think it needed time.the ideas were good, but julian moving to melborne in early 1992,put an end to things.

DOG ACTION...

ah youthful reverie.cant believe we put up with this name for so long.an ocasional noodle session meet of jon campbell and julian williams.we'd get together every so often, smoke a lot of weed and jam.then jon would draw the covers (whick really are better than most of the tapes).these were fun days of wily perth lads with plenty of time on their hands, ocassionaly joined by folks.paul todd in particular played a part.the official release grabbit was actually recorded on one of julians early trips back to w.a after becoming a versitle vic.once again it had fun, lots of weed and a hamilton hill ambience.

STONED POSERS...

a band for all ages, for surely there have been intoxicated posey ones since the time of the ameoba.this band had the charm and humour of self depreciation, enough in fact to buy a bank. jon young on guitar and ian mcyntre on bass provided the hijinks.a sewing machine percussionist called sarah wilmott put the icing on the cake very nicely thankyou. only this band could come up with "it was the wank factor, that killed my dad, made him mad".they had a bit of a political edge, coming from an anarcho background.this is maybe why i loved them so much, they didnt take it too seriously in their music.their tape, recorded in an an underground bunker in west leederville in 1991,is probably a case of you had to be there.maybe not.

FALAFEL...

forward to melbourne a few years later and you had this thing terrorising stages in melborne.ian mycntre was still bassing, but this time his was joined by lora mcfarlane on drms/gtr , the south australian hunter called jad larroway on drms/gtr,and a fellow magic cristian hypocryte paul sloane on gtr.they had an irreverant tone, just like the posers, but probably a bit heavier.their cover of the prisoner theme song was always a showstopper-the emotion!alas like the best falafels, they were digested by the great band eater in the sky. jad and ian went on to form the DENIS LILLIES with jon young.cameron potts eventually took over the drum stool of that outfit.

BIG INTERESTING RIFLE...

an ofshoot combo from the perth axis of o! and squadcar. it was sqddys dessie(andrew) and o's pommie(geoff) who got together and put out a tape of noodling magic, which name escapes me at the moment.for some reason they got julian williams involved when he was staying in perth on holiday.they jammed out the electronic flash boop-boops 10' polycarb in one afternoon of mayhem.then they played a show at the lone star saloon in northbridge(which was bulldozed to make way for the polly farmer tunnel.yes in perth they name freeways and tunells after football stars).the rifle became shootable again while dessie and pommy were in melbourne.the tape on the label comes from a gig at the punters club(now no more.they have that power.to render pub venues to memory).

DOUBLE CHIN...

mustang! left perth after cooking up a big reptation and apparently bringing the kids in.a whole bunch of new bands emerged from their shadow.mustang came from the same willa benola pool.chris gorman and hamish fitzimmons were the surviving members. mike staude and brooke came in on guitars.mustang! recorded their e.p and played a flurry of gigs in melb then fizzled out. hamish left to purshue journalistic a.b.c comitments and mick adams came in on bass,he'd been hanging out as the boy in CLAG.double chin were one of those classic combos.one night they be so appaling it was worse than dolphins fighting each other.then other nights they'd br stratoscopic, multi cosmic.a finer pop vista couldnt be found.they didnt do enough recording for my liking, but they can be heard in all their crazy glory on their ftsm split 7 polycarb.

SOLIDS...

after a few years in the band wilderness, julian williams started jamming with greg wadley.things churned quickly and jad larroway was the analogue synth.starting with songs the band progressed to starchy noise mop improvisers in ther 94-98reign,then 2000 regurgitation.all facets of the bands history is littered in the ftsm atmoshere.hagen ages has the songs, high quality wood panelling is getting looser and then phobos and the possible human have us floating on rain bands with metal sideburns.for me phobos is the high point in our lifetime.jad left to go to londinuim for a bit of nice weather and a cup of cha at lords, while greg and julian went down the hi god people backstreet.

ABOVE GROUND POOL...

CLAG of course have their own history.gawd i'm really tempted to write a book about them, cause after all,one of the best australian bands needs to be better known.when they petered out bek moore, the dynamon singer got together with the julian williams feller to get some differing rock n roll action.also drafted into the original(and some say best)lineup, were dylan martorell on bass and paul kenny williams(no relation to j.w)on drums.jw guitared and came up with some tunes.the band name and a song called sunday came from our first epic encounter.a jam session for the ages.the 10' polycarb/cassette 'bolger cupcake dynasty' quickly came to pass.the pool played the odd gig and then paul went to brisbane and dylan to mexico(anything to get away!).j.w and bek continued on firstly mia scoen came in on drums and the mia/j.w/bek/dylan lineup played some shows and recorded half of the seven incher.alison bolger came in on bass when dylan flew the coop and side two of our seven inch 'red green confuser' was lineup i've lost count.then the pool petered away to nothing for awhile.j.w and bek resurfaced as a duo.we put a bunch of songs on an eight track and realeased them as 'the last breath' cd/ep.the core was reincarneted though.death and rebirth-uug!

BAMBOO-SEL...

yesss...allow for the passage of time to ebb and flow once more.again bek got the wave of action.she and j.w started writing songs again.this time j.w decided six strings were too many.four were the right amount,so he removed the two thinnest and away they went.bek had recruited christine turkell to play sax and keyboards and the ever versitile alison bolger this time sat on the drum stool.the sel rehearsed diligently over one summer, played one show at the empress hotel, did a live to air on 3cr,which was amazing in its ineptness and played a party outside in the back yard of my coburg home.then so long, with the threat of new bamboo directions.it has'nt happed yet,but i wouldnt be surprised if the bamboo is shined up and the sel doesnt.all we have to remember is 3 songs captured on video at the party and the live to air.the best bits are about to released on a cd/ep called 'written by micheal shortly before he left'.look out.

HI GOD PEOPLE...

julian williams and greg wadley had such a good time with solids, that when jad larroway left for londinium, dion nania and dylan martorrell were drafted in to make some improvised biscuit mess.the hi's started out conventionally with a drums, gtrs, bass set up.it was prog rock all the way,but it got looser.more insturmental combinations were employed and fancy dress ups became a reality.the band had concepts.for example, one of the members has a heart attack and mock dies.the others perform some bizzre funeral ritual on him and he comes back to life.another one was three shadows like instrumental guitarists are doing the back n forth guitar swingin thing, when the are attacked by a bunch of heavy metal kids from another dimension.the shows are increasingly becoming more epic.our last show there was seventeen members in the band.it had a harry parch vibe i reckon.our next gig is a musical about a certain j.w myth of creation. double look out.

JULIAN WILLIAMS...

its my website and i'll cry if i want to.i'll stick to the musical j.w course. started doom laden teenager wanting to sulk a lot but having nothing to sulk about.then became wacky english eccentric odd pop meister, but then got heavier pop when distortion bacame a fact of life.from here he just wanted to fuck it up,so it was detuning guitars, recording blind and developing sci fi lyrical stance.it was all downhill when he surprised himself just how much of an awfull noisy racket he could make.then he wanted to do the reptitition noisy prog influenced thing with distorted singing sounding a bit dalek like.his records became a bit more quieter and more space noise thingy whatsit.then he suprised himself and everyone else by going power pop with vocal harmonies all over the shop.not to be outdone,a concept album followed about a coming of age ceremony, and recently a very quiet ambient noise bed time offering.there a ep of songs from one of his plays due out later in the year.this guy doesnt know where he wants to be.heathen!
