Spill Compilation Two

Released: 1993

Some good reactions and two address changes later I started getting the second Spill comp together in 1993. Cd was an exciting new format then and I decided to go with it. This meant mastering to dat using fancy gear in a studio (Cest-Ca on Smith st). Using oomputers for music was unknown and I worked out the song order by making mockups of the comp using two cassette players in real time. We had a release party at a house in Bell st Fitzroy. 29 songs on 76 minute CD. Click on songs to download, or grab the entire album.

1. WONDROUS FAIR .. poor .. 3:35 .. mp3

This track was taken from drafts of the then-soon-to-appear WF album "Cosmological Clock". The band toured Melbourne a soon after this but eventually split after a decade or so of service, singer Deb then forming her 90s indie pop band Dragster.

2. SMALL WORLD EXPERIENCE .. get lost .. 3:19 .. mp3

One of the tracks from SWE's "Shelf Life" album. This version of the band toured Melbourne soon after.

3. SAN JOSE COW MUZAK .. hero king beetle .. 2:32 .. mp3

Brainchild of Richard van Hoesel (gtr/vox) and Christine Thirkell (vox/sax), supported by various instrumentalists over the years, SJCM produced a large output of recordings and live performances in a unique and indefinable style.

4. DEVOTION .. America .. 3:00 .. mp3

Not subtle in its message.

5. THE SUMP .. creed and filth .. 3:40 .. mp3

Paul Newsome's post-HDA band, featuring Michael Ison on vocals.

6. VOLVOX .. theme from 'the potatos' .. 2:09 .. mp3

Lester Vat, Glenn Norman, and Dave Taskas go at it in the manner they were famous for.

7. NEW WAVER .. if you're the one that wins the fight .. 2:12 .. mp3

Unusually for NW, this was an original song - a, erm, deconstruction of the old 50s rocker "Leader of the Pack".

8. THOU GIDEON .. wheel .. 4:34 .. mp3

Extreme noise/performance band from Perth revolving around the core due of Mark Lillypie and Emma Lasting, who made several tours of Melbourne and Sydney during a brief brilliant career before exploding around 1995.

9. THE WORMS .. nazca lines .. 2:02 .. mp3

Solo project by Julie, partner of Richard from San Jose Cow Muzak. This song referred to a well-known South American archaeological mystery.

10. D.N.E. .. interpreter (no. 43) .. 1:07 .. mp3

One of several contributions to the Spill series from Brisbane's Eugene Carchesio.

11. LEM .. psychometrist .. 5:52 .. mp3

Soundart duo featuring Glenn from Volvox and Wes Rush, who toured the world and is now again residing in Melbourne.

12. ARCH BIKIIS .. the parthenon .. 1:54 .. mp3

A solo project by Dave Taskas of Volvox, which harkens back to his earlier band Davros and the Crippled Sons of Athena, regulars at Melbourne's Sod Club in the 80s.

13. INVISIBLE EMPIRE .. country blues .. 2:26 .. mp3

I'm happy to report this luminary Brisbane combo are still going strong today, albeit under a new name the Lost Domain. The band stems from twin obsessions with early blues and experimental guitar music, as is evidenced on this track.

14. BLAIRMAILER .. faxed .. 2:31 .. mp3

A duo consisting of Mike (vox, gtr) and Dave (drums) Nichols, who have individually been members of various other indie pop notables such as the Cannanes, Panel of Judges and Huon.

15. CLOWNS SMILING BACKWARDS .. emulsion .. 6:01 .. mp3

One of the best known indie bands in Melbourne in the 80s and early 90s, singer Bo also ran a studio and continues to perform technical work for other bands while producing his own electronic music under the name WindUpToys, on the Clan Analogue label.

16. NIL BY MOUTH .. as is .. 2:05 .. mp3

Solo guitar and drums recording from Ian Wadley.

17. CAPTAIN'S LOG .. extract re: my electro-dinger's batteries have gone flat .. 1:09 .. mp3

Another solo piece by the inimitable Adam Park, who was at this time also a member of Volvox and New Waver.

18. THE SEA HAGGS .. car trouble .. 2:22 .. mp3

Indie popsters from Perth sing about having trouble with their car. Not quite the lyrical depth of the Adam and the Ants song of the same name.

19. PLATE 6 .. folding an icing bag .. 0:59 .. mp3

An early solo recording by Julian Patterson, later of Minimum Chips and Mum Smokes.

20. THE GOOD CHAMBER .. borne by the wings of poodles .. 2:21 .. mp3

Solo project by Anthony Riddell, aka vocalist Lester Vat of Volvox. Anthony had performed under this name in Sydney and occasionally revived the moniker for solo work.

21. RAMON STRAPADO HANDSHAKE .. achtung .. 2:42 .. mp3

Solo project by Jim Mackay who also played in Devotion.

22. CLAG .. barbarella part one .. 1:46 .. mp3

Early-90s Brisbane indie pop band who moved to Melbourne in 1994 before ceasing operations around 1997 or so. This song is from their first 7” ep "Manufacturing Resent", an instant worldwide indie classic when it was released in 1992. See spill3 entry for more detail.

23. JULIAN WILLIAMS .. 130gu .. 2:06 .. mp3

A tape turned up with no name and a note saying 'use track one'. I found out almost accidentally whoh it was from. Recorded not long after JW moved from Perth to Melbourne, before he became famous for his solo sound-art and pop releases and his role in the Hi God People.

24. SALLY .. bus catcher .. 1:14 .. mp3

A late 80s / early 90s Melbourne duet featuring Robin Schmidt and Richard van Hoesel who released a 7” on the Dr Jim label.

25. WINKY WANKY WOO .. anothernother brain .. 1:02 .. mp3

This was not a band but a radio show on Brisbane's 4ZZZ. Three announcers - Ken Stock, Micheal Ison, and Richard Hagen - made ad-hoc sound collages from records, samples and so on. There is an explanation of this track on Richard's web site.

26. CARCHESIO/HOOPER .. untitled (no. 9) .. 1:53 .. mp3

Eugene and a friend.

27. THE GATEKEEPERS .. forever almost .. 4:07 .. mp3

One of the last GK recordings. Peter Jetnikoff on guitar and vocals, me on bass, with the New Waver drum machine rocking the house.

28. SURGE GUARD .. and now you'll have to go .. 2:44 .. mp3

One of the members of LEM liked to sample late-night talkback radio and do things like this with it.

29. AS SUGGESTED .. tune from rachael .. 2:49 .. mp3

An instrumental side-project by Dave Taskas of Volvox.
